Key takeaway
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of your grades in one semester. The formula is identical to GPA, but the scope is a single term: SGPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits for that semester only. CGPA is what you get when you roll all semester SGPAs together (credit-weighted).

1. The formula
SGPA = (g₁×c₁ + g₂×c₂ + … + gₙ×cₙ) ÷ (c₁ + c₂ + … + cₙ) — for one semester.
2. Worked example (India 10-point)
| Course | Grade | Points (10) | Credits | Points × Credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data Structures | A1 | 10.0 | 4 | 40.0 |
| DBMS | A2 | 9.0 | 4 | 36.0 |
| Networks | B1 | 8.0 | 3 | 24.0 |
| Elective | B2 | 7.0 | 3 | 21.0 |
Total credits = 14. Total points×credits = 121.0. SGPA = 121.0 ÷ 14 = 8.64
3. SGPA vs CGPA
- SGPA = one semester (e.g. 8.64).
- CGPA = credit-weighted average of all semester SGPAs.
They are different numbers; a form asking for "CGPA" does not want a single semester's SGPA.
4. How SGPA rolls up to CGPA
Take each semester's SGPA and its total credits:
- Sem 1: SGPA 8.64 (14 cr)
- Sem 2: SGPA 9.10 (15 cr)
- CGPA = (8.64×14 + 9.10×15) ÷ 29 = 8.88
Averaging 8.64 and 9.10 alone (→ 8.87) is close here only because credits are similar; with unequal credits the weight matters. See cumulative-gpa-calculator.
5. Step-by-step
- List the semester's courses with grades and credits.
- Convert grades to points on your scale.
- Multiply points × credits per course.
- Sum products and sum credits.
- Divide → SGPA (round to two decimals at the end).
6. Common mistakes
- Reporting SGPA as CGPA — different scope.
- Ignoring credits — equal-weighting distorts the average.
- Mixing scales between semesters.
- Rounding before the final divide.
7. Two semesters side by side
| Course | Grade | Pts(10) | Cr | Pts×Cr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sem 1 — DS | A1 | 10 | 4 | 40 |
| Sem 1 — DBMS | A2 | 9 | 4 | 36 |
| Sem 1 — Networks | B1 | 8 | 3 | 24 |
| Sem 1 — Elective | B2 | 7 | 3 | 21 |
| Sem 1 total | 14 | 121 → SGPA 8.64 | ||
| Sem 2 — ML | A1 | 10 | 4 | 40 |
| Sem 2 — OS | A1 | 10 | 4 | 40 |
| Sem 2 — CN | A2 | 9 | 3 | 27 |
| Sem 2 — Project | A2 | 9 | 3 | 27 |
| Sem 2 total | 14 | 134 → SGPA 9.57 |
8. When SGPA alone is what's asked
- Mid-program checks: a scholarship may review a single semester's SGPA.
- Backlog clearing: only the affected semester's SGPA changes.
- Term abroad: an exchange term reports its own SGPA.
- Improvement proof: showing SGPA rose 8.64 → 9.57 signals growth.
9. A backlog (failed) semester
A failed course usually earns 0 points that term, which pulls SGPA down hard:
| Course | Grade | Pts(10) | Cr | Pts×Cr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DS | A1 | 10 | 4 | 40 |
| DBMS | B1 | 8 | 4 | 32 |
| Networks | F | 0 | 3 | 0 |
| Elective | B2 | 7 | 3 | 21 |
SGPA = (40+32+0+21) ÷ 14 = 6.64 — a full 2.0 below the clean 8.64. Clearing the backlog (re-registering and passing) replaces those 0 points in a later semester, but the failed term's SGPA itself normally stays on the record. Plan retakes early; one F costs more than several B's.
FAQ
Q: Is SGPA the same formula as GPA? Yes — same credit-weighted average, just one semester.
Q: My SGPA is 8.64 — what is CGPA? Needs all semesters' SGPAs and credits; see cumulative-gpa-calculator.
Q: Do backlogs affect SGPA? A failed course usually counts as 0 points that term, lowering SGPA until cleared.
Q: Can I convert SGPA to percentage directly? Only via your university rule (×10, VTU offset, or table) — see gpa-to-percentage.
Q: Is SGPA on a 10-point scale like CGPA? Yes — same scale, semester vs cumulative scope.
Q: Why does my marksheet show SGPA but not percentage? Many Indian universities report SGPA/CGPA; you derive % via the official formula.
Q: Does WES use SGPA or CGPA for abroad? WES re-evaluates the whole transcript; your values are previews.
Q: What if a semester has different credit totals? Credit-weight within the semester exactly as shown — unequal course credits are expected.
Q: Can SGPA be over 10? No on a 10-point scale; 10.0 is the max.
Q: Do audit/remedial courses count? Usually excluded; confirm with the registrar.
Q: How is SGPA shown if I repeated a course? Policy varies — some replace, some average; check the circular.
