Key takeaway
India has no single CGPA-to-percentage formula. The rule depends on the issuing body — CBSE graded marksheets use ×9.5 (Circular 24/2010); most universities use ×9.5 as a common fallback or publish their own (e.g. VTU (CGPA−0.75)×10). Scope and assumptions
Conversion figures on these pages are indicative unless issued by your board/university or a credential evaluator (WES/ECE). For admissions, jobs, or immigration, confirm the exact formula and eligibility on the official notification (cbse.gov.in, vtu.ac.in, iimcat.ac.in, upsc.gov.in, ssc.nic.in, isro.gov.in, rbi.org.in, etc.) before submitting. 1. Why there is no single formula
A CGPA is an indicative grade average; the conversion to a percentage is set by whoever issued the certificate:
- CBSE (board, graded batches): Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 — from CBSE Circular No. 24/2010.
- Universities: each publishes its own. The common fallback is ×9.5; VTU uses (CGPA−0.75)×10; some use ×10.
- Foreign evaluators (WES/ECE): re-assess your transcript — your self-conversion is a preview only.
2. Master formula table
| Issuer | Formula | CGPA 8.0 → % | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| CBSE Class 10 (CCE) | CGPA × 9.5 | 76.0% | Circular 24/2010 / cbse.gov.in |
| Generic university | CGPA × 9.5 (fallback) | 76.0% | common |
| VTU | (CGPA−0.75)×10 | 72.5% | vtu.ac.in (verify scheme) |
| Generic ×10 | CGPA × 10 | 80.0% | institute rule |
3. Real eligibility thresholds (the numbers that gate you)
| Gate | Real bar | Source |
|---|---|---|
| JEE / IIT / NIT / IIIT | ≥75% Class 12 aggregate (or board top-20-percentile); 65% SC/ST | JoSAA policy |
| JEE Advanced 2026 | Results declared on jeeadv.ac.in portal (verify exact date) | jeeadv.ac.in |
| CAT / IIM | 50% UG (GEN) / 45% reserved — but top IIM calls need ~99+ CAT percentile + strong academics | iimcat.ac.in; CAT 2026 by IIM Indore |
| UPSC CSE / SSC CGL / bank PO | Graduation (pass) in any discipline — no % bar | upsc.gov.in / ssc.nic.in |
| ISRO / Railway JE / RBI Grade B | 60–65% aggregate (varies) | isro.gov.in / rrbcdg.gov.in / rbi.org.in |
4. Rounding & submission traps
- Never round up near a boundary — CGPA 5.2 = 49.4%, not "about 50%".
- Don't convert a marksheet that already shows a % — use the printed value.
- Don't apply ×9.5 to a university CGPA that has its own rule (e.g. VTU).
- Don't quote a self-converted % as official for foreign schools — WES/ECE decide.
- Percentile ≠ percentage — JEE rank uses percentile; eligibility uses percentage. Different numbers.
FAQ (quick)
Q: Which formula is "official"? Whichever body issued your certificate. CBSE ×9.5 for CBSE graded; your university's rule for its CGPA.
Q: Is ×9.5 valid everywhere? Only for CBSE graded marksheets and as a common fallback where a university gives no formula.
Q: My CGPA 6.3 — above 60%? 6.3 × 9.5 = 59.85%, just under. Verify with your real institute formula.
