Purpose and steps
Bill Split Calculator validates bill before tax and tip, tip (%) of base bill, tax (%) of base bill, people before applying the displayed equation. Equal shares only; separate individual items are not allocated.
- Split a bill equally after adding tax and tip, both calculated on the entered base bill. Compare the total with the actual restaurant bill before paying.
- Enter Bill before tax and tip, Tip (%) of base bill, Tax (%) of base bill, People in the stated format. Baseline values are for reproduction.
- Check the output unit and convention: Read per person (equal shares) with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
- Change one input and compare the result. Equal shares only; separate individual items are not allocated. Totals use unrounded arithmetic; cash rounding can leave a small residual to allocate.
Input reference and units
These values reproduce the model’s demonstration. Replace them with your own records or measurements; they are not recommended targets.
On a small screen, swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.
| Parameter | Demonstration value | How to enter it |
|---|---|---|
| Bill before tax and tip | 100 | Enter bill before tax and tip without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Equal shares only; separate individual items are not allocated. |
| Tip (%) of base bill | 15 | Enter tip (%) of base bill without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Equal shares only; separate individual items are not allocated. |
| Tax (%) of base bill | 5 | Enter tax (%) of base bill without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Equal shares only; separate individual items are not allocated. |
| People | 4 | A positive whole-person count; zero and fractional people are invalid. |
Model-specific method
How this calculator produces its result
Bill Split Calculator: total = bill × (1 + tip/100 + tax/100); each = total / people. Input definitions: bill = Bill before tax and tip; tip = Tip (%) of base bill; tax = Tax (%) of base bill; people = People. Use the selected convention throughout the calculation.
Bill Split Calculator: calculation relationships
Split a bill equally after adding tax and tip, both calculated on the entered base bill. Compare the total with the actual restaurant bill before paying. Equal shares only; separate individual items are not allocated. Totals use unrounded arithmetic; cash rounding can leave a small residual to allocate.
Tax and tip both use the same base in this model. A base bill of 90, tax 10% and tip 20% gives 90×1.30=117, split three ways as 39. Tax-on-tip or tip-on-tax would be different equations. When rounding to cash precision leaves a residual, allocate that amount explicitly rather than expecting identical rounded shares always to add exactly.
total = bill × (1 + tip/100 + tax/100); each = total / people
- bill: Bill before tax and tip. Enter bill before tax and tip without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Equal shares only; separate individual items are not allocated.
- tip: Tip (%) of base bill. Enter tip (%) of base bill without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Equal shares only; separate individual items are not allocated.
- tax: Tax (%) of base bill. Enter tax (%) of base bill without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Equal shares only; separate individual items are not allocated.
- people: People. A positive whole-person count; zero and fractional people are invalid.
- Result units: stated beside each output
- Calculation relationship: total = bill × (1 + tip/100 + tax/100); each = total / people
- Supported domain: see the limits below
Worked example
Bill Split Calculator baseline input: Bill before tax and tip: 100; Tip (%) of base bill: 15; Tax (%) of base bill: 5; People: 4. Output: Per person (equal shares) = 30; Total = 120. Substitute these values into the displayed equation to reproduce the result.
Reproduce the default scenario
This reproduces the default inputs in the reference table above; it is not an additional independent example. Displayed rounding may differ from intermediate precision.
- Per person (equal shares)
- 30
- Total
- 120
Reading results without overstating them
- Read per person (equal shares) with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
- Change one input at a time and use the equation to explain the result; do not mix unit, grade-scale, time-zone or rounding conventions across comparisons.
Assumptions and exclusions
- Equal shares only; separate individual items are not allocated.
- Totals use unrounded arithmetic; cash rounding can leave a small residual to allocate.
