Purpose and steps
Wall area is 2 × (room length + width) × ceiling height, less doors and windows. If selected, ceiling area is length × width. Net area is multiplied by coat count and divided by the chosen paint coverage.
- Measure each area in consistent length units and confirm the product’s package coverage or volume yield.
- Split irregular areas into regular shapes and enter dimensions, depth or coverage. Set openings, waste and coats for the actual project.
- Check the headline result and its components. A key interpretation for this tool is: Round to purchasable can sizes after comparing one- and five-gallon pricing.
- Compare the baseline with a changed scenario: Use the manufacturer’s label coverage when it differs from the default.
Model-specific method
How this calculator produces its result
Gallons = ((wall area − openings + optional ceiling) × coats) ÷ coverage per gallon, rounded up for purchase.
Area, coverage and indivisible purchase units
Area has squared length units, so conversion factors must also be squared. Ten feet converted to meters and then multiplied by another converted dimension gives the same area as converting square feet with its area factor. Count walls or separate shapes individually before adding them, rather than using an arbitrary bounding rectangle for an irregular project.
Procurement introduces discrete rounding. Add the intended waste allowance and coats before dividing by packaging coverage, then round the final purchase quantity upward. Do not repeatedly round each intermediate conversion. Layout cuts, substrate condition and product yield determine whether a mathematical area is sufficient for the installation.
Rectangle area = length × width Required coverage = net area × (1+waste fraction) × coats Packages = ceil(required coverage / coverage per package)
- Net area: after appropriate openings or exclusions
- Waste: extra material allowance, not additional measured area
- Coats: used for paint, not ordinary single-layer flooring
- Package coverage: read the specific product label
Worked example
A 12 × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls has 352 sq ft of wall area. After 51 sq ft of doors and windows, two coats cover 602 sq ft; at 350 sq ft/gal, buy 2 gallons before any added waste.
Reading results without overstating them
- Round to purchasable can sizes after comparing one- and five-gallon pricing.
- Use the manufacturer’s label coverage when it differs from the default.
Assumptions and exclusions
- The estimate uses U.S. gallons and common coverage per gallon.
- Color changes, rough surfaces, and application loss can increase actual use; verify the product label.
- Porous surfaces, dramatic color changes, spraying, and touch-ups can increase use.
