Purpose and steps
Roman Numeral Converter validates integer or roman numeral before applying the displayed equation. Zero, negative numbers and overbar notation are outside the supported form.
- Convert between canonical Roman numerals and integers from 1 to 3,999. Subtractive pairs such as IV and IX are validated instead of accepting arbitrary symbol combinations.
- Enter Integer or Roman numeral in the stated format. Baseline values are for reproduction.
- Check the output unit and convention: Read roman numeral with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
- Change one input and compare the result. Zero, negative numbers and overbar notation are outside the supported form. Noncanonical forms such as IIII are rejected.
Input reference and units
These values reproduce the model’s demonstration. Replace them with your own records or measurements; they are not recommended targets.
On a small screen, swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.
| Parameter | Demonstration value | How to enter it |
|---|---|---|
| Integer or Roman numeral | 1994 | Enter integer or roman numeral without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Zero, negative numbers and overbar notation are outside the supported form. |
Model-specific method
How this calculator produces its result
Roman Numeral Converter: value = sum(additive symbols) − subtractive corrections. Input definitions: value = Integer or Roman numeral. Use the selected convention throughout the calculation.
Roman Numeral Converter: calculation relationships
Convert between canonical Roman numerals and integers from 1 to 3,999. Subtractive pairs such as IV and IX are validated instead of accepting arbitrary symbol combinations. Zero, negative numbers and overbar notation are outside the supported form. Noncanonical forms such as IIII are rejected.
Subtractive notation places a smaller symbol before an allowed larger one. XL contributes 40 and II contributes 2, so XLII is 42. Canonical writing is important: four is IV rather than IIII in this implementation. The supported range ends at 3999 and does not interpret overbars or historical alternative spellings.
value = sum(additive symbols) − subtractive corrections
- value: Integer or Roman numeral. Enter integer or roman numeral without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Zero, negative numbers and overbar notation are outside the supported form.
- Result units: stated beside each output
- Calculation relationship: value = sum(additive symbols) − subtractive corrections
- Supported domain: see the limits below
Worked example
Roman Numeral Converter baseline input: Integer or Roman numeral: 1994. Output: Roman numeral = MCMXCIV. Substitute these values into the displayed equation to reproduce the result.
Reproduce the default scenario
This reproduces the default inputs in the reference table above; it is not an additional independent example. Displayed rounding may differ from intermediate precision.
- Roman numeral
- MCMXCIV
Reading results without overstating them
- Read roman numeral with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
- Change one input at a time and use the equation to explain the result; do not mix unit, grade-scale, time-zone or rounding conventions across comparisons.
Assumptions and exclusions
- Zero, negative numbers and overbar notation are outside the supported form.
- Noncanonical forms such as IIII are rejected.
