Purpose and steps

Roof footprint is multiplied by a pitch factor to estimate surface area. Each 100 sq ft is one roofing square, then bundles per square and waste determine the order quantity.

  1. Measure each area in consistent length units and confirm the product’s package coverage or volume yield.
  2. Split irregular areas into regular shapes and enter dimensions, depth or coverage. Set openings, waste and coats for the actual project.
  3. Check the headline result and its components. A key interpretation for this tool is: Count each roof plane and use the actual pitch.
  4. Compare the baseline with a changed scenario: Estimate ridge caps, starters, underlayment, flashing, and valley material separately.

Model-specific method

How this calculator produces its result

Roof surface = footprint × pitch factor. Roofing squares = surface area ÷ 100 sq ft. Bundles = squares × bundles per square, with waste added and rounded up.

Pythagoras turns a roof footprint into slope area

A sloped roof has more surface area than its horizontal projection. The slope factor is the hypotenuse of a right triangle with horizontal side one and vertical side equal to pitch. At 6:12 pitch, rise/run=0.5, so the factor is about 1.118 rather than 1.5.

If you already measured the actual sloped surface, applying the pitch factor again double-counts slope. Break complex roofs into planes with their own pitches. Shingle waste and bundle rounding are procurement steps, while ridge caps, valleys, starters and underlayment need their own quantities.

Slope factor = √(1 + (rise/run)^2)
Roof surface = horizontal footprint × slope factor
Roofing squares = surface / 100 ft²
  • rise/run: roof pitch with matching length units
  • Footprint: horizontal projection, not measured slope area
  • Roofing square: 100 square feet
  • Bundles: verify bundles per square for the product

Worked example

A 40 × 30 ft footprint with a 6:12 pitch has about 1,342 sq ft of roof surface. With 10% waste and 3 bundles per square, order about 45 bundles.

Reading results without overstating them

  • Count each roof plane and use the actual pitch.
  • Estimate ridge caps, starters, underlayment, flashing, and valley material separately.

Assumptions and exclusions

  • Defaults follow common U.S. asphalt-shingle packaging.
  • Ridge caps, valleys, starter strips, and underlayment should be estimated separately.
  • Dormers, hips, valleys, tear-off damage, bundle coverage, and local code affect the final order.
