Purpose and steps
Temperature Converter validates temperature, from scale, to scale before applying the displayed equation. Inputs below absolute zero are rejected.
- Convert among Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin using both the scale factor and the zero-point offset. Unlike lengths, temperatures cannot be converted using a scale factor alone.
- Enter Temperature, From scale, To scale in the stated format. Baseline values are for reproduction.
- Check the output unit and convention: Read temperature with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
- Change one input and compare the result. Inputs below absolute zero are rejected. Kelvin is written K without the degree symbol.
Input reference and units
These values reproduce the model’s demonstration. Replace them with your own records or measurements; they are not recommended targets.
On a small screen, swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.
| Parameter | Demonstration value | How to enter it |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 0 | Enter temperature without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Inputs below absolute zero are rejected. |
| From scale | Celsius (°C) | Select the explicitly labeled convention before interpreting the numerical input. |
| To scale | Fahrenheit (°F) | Select the explicitly labeled convention before interpreting the numerical input. |
Model-specific method
How this calculator produces its result
Temperature Converter: F = C × 9/5 + 32; K = C + 273.15. Input definitions: value = Temperature; from = From scale; to = To scale. Use the selected convention throughout the calculation.
Temperature Converter: calculation relationships
Convert among Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin using both the scale factor and the zero-point offset. Unlike lengths, temperatures cannot be converted using a scale factor alone. Inputs below absolute zero are rejected. Kelvin is written K without the degree symbol.
Absolute temperatures require an offset as well as a scale: 100°C×9/5+32=212°F and 100°C+273.15=373.15 K. A temperature difference of 100°C instead corresponds to 180°F, without adding 32. This tool converts absolute temperatures; it rejects temperatures below absolute zero rather than treating them as ordinary signed unit values.
F = C × 9/5 + 32; K = C + 273.15
- value: Temperature. Enter temperature without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Inputs below absolute zero are rejected.
- from: From scale. Select the explicitly labeled convention before interpreting the numerical input.
- to: To scale. Select the explicitly labeled convention before interpreting the numerical input.
- Result units: stated beside each output
- Calculation relationship: F = C × 9/5 + 32; K = C + 273.15
- Supported domain: see the limits below
Worked example
Temperature Converter baseline input: Temperature: 0; From scale: Celsius (°C); To scale: Fahrenheit (°F). Output: Temperature = 32 °F. Substitute these values into the displayed equation to reproduce the result.
Reproduce the default scenario
This reproduces the default inputs in the reference table above; it is not an additional independent example. Displayed rounding may differ from intermediate precision.
- Temperature
- 32 °F
Reading results without overstating them
- Read temperature with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
- Change one input at a time and use the equation to explain the result; do not mix unit, grade-scale, time-zone or rounding conventions across comparisons.
Assumptions and exclusions
- Inputs below absolute zero are rejected.
- Kelvin is written K without the degree symbol.
