Purpose and steps
Time Card Calculator validates rows: start hh:mm, end hh:mm, break minutes, hourly rate, allow overnight shifts before applying the displayed equation. Up to 366 shifts; each shift must have exactly three columns.
- Total shifts and break deductions from one row per shift, then apply a flat hourly rate. Use clock times rather than decimal-hour numbers in the shift rows.
- Enter Rows: start HH:MM, end HH:MM, break minutes, Hourly rate, Allow overnight shifts in the stated format. Baseline values are for reproduction.
- Check the output unit and convention: Read total hours with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
- Change one input and compare the result. Up to 366 shifts; each shift must have exactly three columns. Overtime, taxes, jurisdictional break rules and daylight-saving transitions are not modeled.
Input reference and units
These values reproduce the model’s demonstration. Replace them with your own records or measurements; they are not recommended targets.
On a small screen, swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.
| Parameter | Demonstration value | How to enter it |
|---|---|---|
| Rows: start HH:MM, end HH:MM, break minutes | 09:00 17:30 30 09:00 17:00 30 | One item per line; match the columns in “Rows: start HH:MM, end HH:MM, break minutes”. Do not include a header row. |
| Hourly rate | 20 | Enter hourly rate without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Up to 366 shifts; each shift must have exactly three columns. |
| Allow overnight shifts | false | Allow an earlier end clock to mean the following day; equal clocks still mean zero duration. |
Model-specific method
How this calculator produces its result
Time Card Calculator: total hours = Σ(shift minutes − breaks) / 60; pay = hours × hourly rate. Input definitions: rows = Rows: start HH:MM, end HH:MM, break minutes; rate = Hourly rate; overnight = Allow overnight shifts. Use the selected convention throughout the calculation.
Time Card Calculator: calendar conventions
Total shifts and break deductions from one row per shift, then apply a flat hourly rate. Use clock times rather than decimal-hour numbers in the shift rows. Up to 366 shifts; each shift must have exactly three columns. Overtime, taxes, jurisdictional break rules and daylight-saving transitions are not modeled.
Add shift minutes before converting the total to hours. Shifts 09:00–12:00 with no break and 13:00–17:00 with a 30-minute break contribute 180+210=390 minutes, or 6.5 hours. At a flat rate of 12, gross pay is 78. This avoids rounding each shift separately; payroll-specific overtime, deductions and rounding still need a separate policy.
total hours = Σ(shift minutes − breaks) / 60; pay = hours × hourly rate
- rows: Rows: start HH:MM, end HH:MM, break minutes. One item per line; match the columns in “Rows: start HH:MM, end HH:MM, break minutes”. Do not include a header row.
- rate: Hourly rate. Enter hourly rate without adding a unit suffix. Scope: Up to 366 shifts; each shift must have exactly three columns.
- overnight: Allow overnight shifts. Allow an earlier end clock to mean the following day; equal clocks still mean zero duration.
- Result units: stated beside each output
- Calculation relationship: total hours = Σ(shift minutes − breaks) / 60; pay = hours × hourly rate

Worked example
Time Card Calculator baseline input: Rows: start HH:MM, end HH:MM, break minutes: 09:00 17:30 30 / 09:00 17:00 30; Hourly rate: 20; Allow overnight shifts: not selected. Output: Total hours = 15.5 hours; Gross pay (no overtime rule) = 310. Substitute these values into the displayed equation to reproduce the result.
Reproduce the default scenario
This reproduces the default inputs in the reference table above; it is not an additional independent example. Displayed rounding may differ from intermediate precision.
- Total hours
- 15.5 hours
- Gross pay (no overtime rule)
- 310
Reading results without overstating them
- Read total hours with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
- Change one input at a time and use the equation to explain the result; do not mix unit, grade-scale, time-zone or rounding conventions across comparisons.
Assumptions and exclusions
- Up to 366 shifts; each shift must have exactly three columns.
- Overtime, taxes, jurisdictional break rules and daylight-saving transitions are not modeled.
