Purpose and steps

Tip Calculator validates bill before tip, tip (%), people before applying the displayed equation. People must be a positive whole number.

  1. Compute a tip, total payment and an equal per-person share. Specify whether the entered bill is your chosen pre-tax or post-tax tipping base.
  2. Enter Bill before tip, Tip (%), People in the stated format. Baseline values are for reproduction.
  3. Check the output unit and convention: Read tip with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
  4. Change one input and compare the result. People must be a positive whole number. Check whether the bill already includes a service charge before adding a tip; this calculator does not detect one automatically.

Input reference and units

These values reproduce the model’s demonstration. Replace them with your own records or measurements; they are not recommended targets.

On a small screen, swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.

Parameters used by this calculator
ParameterDemonstration valueHow to enter it
Bill before tip80 Enter bill before tip without adding a unit suffix. Scope: People must be a positive whole number.
Tip (%)15 Enter tip (%) without adding a unit suffix. Scope: People must be a positive whole number.
People2 A positive whole-person count; zero and fractional people are invalid.

Model-specific method

How this calculator produces its result

Tip Calculator: tip = bill × rate/100; per person = (bill + tip) / people. Input definitions: bill = Bill before tip; tip = Tip (%); people = People. Use the selected convention throughout the calculation.

Tip Calculator: calculation relationships

Compute a tip, total payment and an equal per-person share. Specify whether the entered bill is your chosen pre-tax or post-tax tipping base. People must be a positive whole number. Check whether the bill already includes a service charge before adding a tip; this calculator does not detect one automatically.

For a chosen tipping base of 120 and a tip rate of 18%, the gratuity is 21.60, total is 141.60 and three equal shares are 47.20 each. A tip calculated on a post-tax bill differs from one calculated before tax. Check an existing service charge separately; the tool does not know whether the entered bill already includes one.

tip = bill × rate/100; per person = (bill + tip) / people
  • bill: Bill before tip. Enter bill before tip without adding a unit suffix. Scope: People must be a positive whole number.
  • tip: Tip (%). Enter tip (%) without adding a unit suffix. Scope: People must be a positive whole number.
  • people: People. A positive whole-person count; zero and fractional people are invalid.
  • Result units: stated beside each output
  • Calculation relationship: tip = bill × rate/100; per person = (bill + tip) / people
  • Supported domain: see the limits below

Worked example

Tip Calculator baseline input: Bill before tip: 80; Tip (%): 15; People: 2. Output: Tip = 12; Total = 92; Per person = 46. Substitute these values into the displayed equation to reproduce the result.

Reproduce the default scenario

This reproduces the default inputs in the reference table above; it is not an additional independent example. Displayed rounding may differ from intermediate precision.

Reading results without overstating them

  • Read tip with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
  • Change one input at a time and use the equation to explain the result; do not mix unit, grade-scale, time-zone or rounding conventions across comparisons.

Assumptions and exclusions

  • People must be a positive whole number.
  • Check whether the bill already includes a service charge before adding a tip; this calculator does not detect one automatically.
