Purpose and steps

CGPA Calculator validates rows: grade points, credits (one course per line), maximum gpa scale, previous cumulative gpa, previous credits before applying the displayed equation. No institution-specific A–F conversion or honors bonus is assumed.

  1. Calculate cumulative GPA from credit-weighted grade points, keeping the grade scale explicit. Previous GPA and credits are included in the weighted total.
  2. Enter Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line), Maximum GPA scale, Previous cumulative GPA, Previous credits in the stated format. Baseline values are for reproduction.
  3. Check the output unit and convention: Read gpa with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
  4. Change one input and compare the result. No institution-specific A–F conversion or honors bonus is assumed. Zero-credit courses add no weight. The result uses only supplied courses and prior credits.

Input reference and units

These values reproduce the model’s demonstration. Replace them with your own records or measurements; they are not recommended targets.

On a small screen, swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.

Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line)4 3 3 3 One item per line; match the columns in “Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line)”. Do not include a header row.
Maximum GPA scale4 Use your institution’s maximum grade-point scale; grades must not exceed it.
Previous cumulative GPA3.2 Prior quality points divided by prior GPA-bearing credits, on the same scale.
Previous credits30 GPA-bearing credits already represented by the prior cumulative GPA.

Model-specific method

How this calculator produces its result

CGPA Calculator: GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) / Σcredits. Input definitions: rows = Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line); scale = Maximum GPA scale; oldGpa = Previous cumulative GPA; oldCredits = Previous credits. Use the selected convention throughout the calculation.

CGPA Calculator: calculation relationships

Calculate cumulative GPA from credit-weighted grade points, keeping the grade scale explicit. Previous GPA and credits are included in the weighted total. No institution-specific A–F conversion or honors bonus is assumed. Zero-credit courses add no weight. The result uses only supplied courses and prior credits.

A prior cumulative GPA represents an existing weighted total. GPA 3 over 30 credits contains 90 quality points. Ten new credits at GPA 4 add 40 points, giving 130/40 = 3.25. Simply averaging 3 and 4 would overstate the effect of the smaller new term. Retake-replacement policies need adjustments to the supplied totals.

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) / Σcredits
  • rows: Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line). One item per line; match the columns in “Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line)”. Do not include a header row.
  • scale: Maximum GPA scale. Use your institution’s maximum grade-point scale; grades must not exceed it.
  • oldGpa: Previous cumulative GPA. Prior quality points divided by prior GPA-bearing credits, on the same scale.
  • oldCredits: Previous credits. GPA-bearing credits already represented by the prior cumulative GPA.
  • Result units: stated beside each output
  • Calculation relationship: GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) / Σcredits
  • Supported domain: see the limits below

Worked example

CGPA Calculator baseline input: Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line): 4 3 / 3 3; Maximum GPA scale: 4; Previous cumulative GPA: 3.2; Previous credits: 30. Output: GPA = 3.25; Credits = 36; Quality points = 117. Substitute these values into the displayed equation to reproduce the result.

Reproduce the default scenario

This reproduces the default inputs in the reference table above; it is not an additional independent example. Displayed rounding may differ from intermediate precision.

Reading results without overstating them

  • Read gpa with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
  • Change one input at a time and use the equation to explain the result; do not mix unit, grade-scale, time-zone or rounding conventions across comparisons.

Assumptions and exclusions

  • No institution-specific A–F conversion or honors bonus is assumed.
  • Zero-credit courses add no weight. The result uses only supplied courses and prior credits.
