Purpose and steps
Final Grade Calculator validates completed coursework average (%), final exam grade (%), final exam weight (%) before applying the displayed equation. All grades and the exam weight range from 0 to 100%; a zero exam weight leaves the coursework average unchanged.
- Project the overall course grade from completed coursework, a final exam score and its weight. Enter a known or hypothetical exam score; use Required Grade to solve backwards from a target.
- Enter Completed coursework average (%), Final exam grade (%), Final exam weight (%) in the stated format. Baseline values are for reproduction.
- Check the output unit and convention: Read projected final grade with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
- Change one input and compare the result. All grades and the exam weight range from 0 to 100%; a zero exam weight leaves the coursework average unchanged. No grading curves, extra credit, letter-grade thresholds or institution-specific rounding rules are assumed.
Input reference and units
These values reproduce the model’s demonstration. Replace them with your own records or measurements; they are not recommended targets.
On a small screen, swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.
| Parameter | Demonstration value | How to enter it |
|---|---|---|
| Completed coursework average (%) | 85 | Average of completed coursework BEFORE multiplying by its course weight. |
| Final exam grade (%) | 95 | Known or hypothetical exam score, from 0 to 100. |
| Final exam weight (%) | 40 | Percentage of the entire course assigned to the remaining exam, not a fraction such as 0.4. |
Model-specific method
How this calculator produces its result
Final Grade Calculator: final grade = current × (1 − weight/100) + exam × weight/100. Input definitions: current = Completed coursework average (%); exam = Final exam grade (%); weight = Final exam weight (%). Use the selected convention throughout the calculation.
Final Grade Calculator: calculation relationships
Project the overall course grade from completed coursework, a final exam score and its weight. Enter a known or hypothetical exam score; use Required Grade to solve backwards from a target. All grades and the exam weight range from 0 to 100%; a zero exam weight leaves the coursework average unchanged. No grading curves, extra credit, letter-grade thresholds or institution-specific rounding rules are assumed.
This is a forward weighted average. Coursework at 80% occupies 75% of the course and an exam at 90% occupies 25%, so the final grade is 80×0.75 + 90×0.25 = 82.5%. Enter the average of the completed portion, not an already weighted contribution of 60 points; weighting that contribution again would double-count the weight.
final grade = current × (1 − weight/100) + exam × weight/100
- current: Completed coursework average (%). Average of completed coursework BEFORE multiplying by its course weight.
- exam: Final exam grade (%). Known or hypothetical exam score, from 0 to 100.
- weight: Final exam weight (%). Percentage of the entire course assigned to the remaining exam, not a fraction such as 0.4.
- Result units: stated beside each output
- Calculation relationship: final grade = current × (1 − weight/100) + exam × weight/100
- Supported domain: see the limits below
Worked example
Final Grade Calculator baseline input: Completed coursework average (%): 85; Final exam grade (%): 95; Final exam weight (%): 40. Output: Projected final grade = 89 %. Substitute these values into the displayed equation to reproduce the result.
Reproduce the default scenario
This reproduces the default inputs in the reference table above; it is not an additional independent example. Displayed rounding may differ from intermediate precision.
- Projected final grade
- 89%
Reading results without overstating them
- Read projected final grade with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
- Change one input at a time and use the equation to explain the result; do not mix unit, grade-scale, time-zone or rounding conventions across comparisons.
Assumptions and exclusions
- All grades and the exam weight range from 0 to 100%; a zero exam weight leaves the coursework average unchanged.
- No grading curves, extra credit, letter-grade thresholds or institution-specific rounding rules are assumed.
