Purpose and steps

GPA Calculator validates rows: grade points, credits (one course per line), maximum gpa scale before applying the displayed equation. No institution-specific A–F conversion or honors bonus is assumed.

  1. Calculate GPA from credit-weighted grade points, keeping the grade scale explicit. Convert letter grades using your institution’s own scale before entering them.
  2. Enter Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line), Maximum GPA scale in the stated format. Baseline values are for reproduction.
  3. Check the output unit and convention: Read gpa with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
  4. Change one input and compare the result. No institution-specific A–F conversion or honors bonus is assumed. Zero-credit courses add no weight. The result uses only supplied courses and prior credits.

Input reference and units

These values reproduce the model’s demonstration. Replace them with your own records or measurements; they are not recommended targets.

On a small screen, swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.

Parameters used by this calculator
ParameterDemonstration valueHow to enter it
Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line)4 3 3 3 One item per line; match the columns in “Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line)”. Do not include a header row.
Maximum GPA scale4 Use your institution’s maximum grade-point scale; grades must not exceed it.

Model-specific method

How this calculator produces its result

GPA Calculator: GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) / Σcredits. Input definitions: rows = Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line); scale = Maximum GPA scale. Use the selected convention throughout the calculation.

GPA Calculator: calculation relationships

Calculate GPA from credit-weighted grade points, keeping the grade scale explicit. Convert letter grades using your institution’s own scale before entering them. No institution-specific A–F conversion or honors bonus is assumed. Zero-credit courses add no weight. The result uses only supplied courses and prior credits.

Multiply each grade point by its course credits before summing. With 4 points for one credit and 2 points for three credits, the numerator is 4×1 + 2×3 = 10 and the denominator is 4 credits: GPA = 2.5, not the unweighted mean of 3. Zero-grade courses still add credits to the denominator.

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) / Σcredits
  • rows: Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line). One item per line; match the columns in “Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line)”. Do not include a header row.
  • scale: Maximum GPA scale. Use your institution’s maximum grade-point scale; grades must not exceed it.
  • Result units: stated beside each output
  • Calculation relationship: GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) / Σcredits
  • Supported domain: see the limits below

Worked example

GPA Calculator baseline input: Rows: grade points, credits (one course per line): 4 3 / 3 3; Maximum GPA scale: 4. Output: GPA = 3.5; Credits = 6; Quality points = 21. Substitute these values into the displayed equation to reproduce the result.

Reproduce the default scenario

This reproduces the default inputs in the reference table above; it is not an additional independent example. Displayed rounding may differ from intermediate precision.

Reading results without overstating them

  • Read gpa with its stated unit and convention. The default example and the independent worked scenario use different inputs, so compare the assumptions before comparing the numbers.
  • Change one input at a time and use the equation to explain the result; do not mix unit, grade-scale, time-zone or rounding conventions across comparisons.

Assumptions and exclusions

  • No institution-specific A–F conversion or honors bonus is assumed.
  • Zero-credit courses add no weight. The result uses only supplied courses and prior credits.
