Unit and Representation Converters: Choose the Right Quantity

Conversion preserves a quantity or representation relationship; it does not add missing physical assumptions. Length, area and volume use different powers of a scale factor. Mass and volume need density to connect them. Temperature readings need an offset, while temperature differences do not. Numeric bases and colors are representations rather than physical units. Choose the quantity first, then specify the source and target formats.

Calculators in this collection

Length Converter

Convert length between the listed units using a common reference. Select the source and target length units; the result retains the input’s sign.

Calculate →

Weight Converter

Convert mass between the listed units using a common reference. Select the source and target mass units; material volume requires separate density information.

Calculate →

Temperature Converter

Convert among Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin using both the scale factor and the zero-point offset. Unlike lengths, temperatures cannot be converted using a scale factor alone.

Calculate →

Speed Converter

Convert speed between the listed units using a common reference. Check both the distance and time units in the source and target; the input’s sign is retained.

Calculate →

Area Converter

Convert area between the listed units using a common reference. Area factors use squared length relationships, not the factors for a length conversion.

Calculate →

Volume Converter

Convert volume between the displayed units using a common reference unit. The result keeps the input’s sign; select the exact unit rather than relying on an abbreviation alone.

Calculate →

Binary Hex Decimal Converter

Convert unsigned whole numbers among binary, decimal and hexadecimal without losing integer precision. Enter digits only, excluding prefixes such as 0x and 0b.

Calculate →

Roman Numeral Converter

Convert between canonical Roman numerals and integers from 1 to 3,999. Subtractive pairs such as IV and IX are validated instead of accepting arbitrary symbol combinations.

Calculate →

Color Code Converter

Convert HEX, RGB or HSL notation into all three formats. HSL hue wraps around 360 degrees; saturation and lightness are percentages, and RGB output rounds to 8-bit channels.

Calculate →

Unix Timestamp Converter

Convert Unix timestamps to UTC ISO dates or convert a UTC date and time to a timestamp. Choose seconds or milliseconds explicitly instead of guessing from the number’s length.

Length, area and volume use different powers

One foot is exactly 0.3048 meters. One square foot is therefore 0.3048² = 0.09290304 square meters, and one cubic foot is 0.3048³ = 0.028316846592 cubic meters. Applying the length factor once to an area or volume produces the wrong dimension. The Area and Volume tools make the exponent part of the conversion rather than relying on a unit label alone.

Before entering a value, distinguish an actual measurement from a rate. A speed such as miles per hour combines a distance and a time unit. A paint coverage figure combines area with product volume. The conversion tools handle their stated quantity, not an arbitrary compound rate or a procurement allowance.

Similar names can describe different units

A U.S. liquid gallon and an Imperial gallon have different sizes. A short ton, long ton and metric tonne also have different definitions. Select the exact unit rather than copying the word gallon or ton from a record without context. The output can be numerically precise while the input unit identification is wrong.

Mass-to-volume conversion is not a fixed unit conversion. To convert a volume of gravel to mass, a density is required; material composition and moisture can affect it. Use an appropriate material calculator with a stated density rather than treating one cubic yard as a universal number of tons.

Temperature readings differ from temperature changes

For an absolute Celsius reading, Fahrenheit equals Celsius × 9/5 + 32. For a temperature change, the offset cancels: a 10°C change corresponds to an 18°F change, not 50°F. Kelvin shares the Celsius increment but has a different zero point. The absolute-temperature calculator uses its declared affine relationship and rejects values below absolute zero.

A rounded conversion does not increase the precision of a measurement. If the source value is approximate, extra displayed digits are computational detail rather than improved measurement accuracy. Keep the source unit and sufficient intermediate precision if you will convert back or calculate another result.

Representations have their own validation rules

The binary, hexadecimal and decimal converter represents exact integers in different bases; it does not evaluate arbitrary formulas. Roman numerals use the supported conventional range and validation rules rather than being a general-purpose integer encoding. A Unix timestamp needs an explicit seconds or milliseconds unit even though its digits look like an ordinary integer.

Color conversion relates channels under a specified model. RGB and HSL descriptions of the same color can show small rounding differences when channels are quantized to integers. Preserve the model and scale, especially whether saturation and lightness are percentages. A converted color value is not an accessibility contrast rating or a printer color profile.

Questions before you calculate

Can a weight converter turn liters into kilograms?

Not without density. Liters describe volume and kilograms describe mass. A specific material and density model can connect them, but a universal multiplier would conceal an assumption and give the wrong answer for many materials.

Why does a round trip differ slightly?

Intermediate display rounding can discard precision. Use the unrounded result for a subsequent conversion when possible. Decimal floating-point approximations can also introduce tiny differences, which should be interpreted relative to the scale and precision of the input.

Are a temperature and a temperature interval converted alike?

Their scale factors are related, but an absolute reading includes the zero-point offset. A difference cancels that offset. State which quantity you have before applying an equation or interpreting the result.
