Calculation notes

Understand the Drywall calculator

Wall area comes from room perimeter × height, less openings; ceiling area is added when selected. Net area plus waste is divided by sheet coverage and rounded up.

Formula and logic

How do I calculate drywall sheets for walls and a ceiling?

Surface area = wall perimeter × height − openings + optional ceiling. Sheets = adjusted area ÷ sheet area, rounded up.

Worked example

How many 4 by 8 ft drywall sheets are needed for a 12 by 10 ft room?

A 12 × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls and a ceiling has 472 sq ft before openings. With 10% waste and 4 × 8 ft sheets, it needs about 17 sheets before deducting doors and windows.

How to read the result

Can longer drywall sheets reduce seams and material waste?

  • Compare layouts using 8-, 10-, or 12-ft sheets to reduce seams.
  • Estimate moisture- or fire-rated board separately by room.
Limits and assumptions

What framing and layout details can change drywall quantity?

  • Irregular walls, offcuts, and many openings may require more waste.
  • Sheet dimensions, tape, and compound needs depend on locally available products.
  • Sheet orientation, framing layout, cutouts, damaged edges, and local code affect the order.
